Brain surgery with boxing gloves...I'll have to put that on a banner
somewhere in my workroom.

In regards to the diagnostic tools, those were my best - the ones I use
everyday to help me resolve issues. The "Windows-on-a-CD" disc is one
I've been using and tweaking for about two years. There's just no
getting around the fact that Windows XP is one massive black box (Vista
is five times worse). I'm just glad that it left working. I still
can't take much claim for the fix considering I still don't know what
was wrong and I sure as hell don't know which shot from the hip managed
to fix it.

I've said for quite awhile now that Windows repair often becomes more of
art than a science. I get at least two "mystery boxes" a month where
set procedure gets thrown out the window and instinct (read: "educated"
guessing) takes over.

Sounds like a plan.
